Pictures don't know you want to send them by email.

I guess that after selecting, you right-click and use the "send to…" option. This is provided by your operating system and that is where you need to configure exactly what it does.

I always do it the other way round. I write an email message and attach pictures or documents to it. You can

  • drag-and-drop onto the address box in Thunderbird,
  • use the menu in Thunderbird ("File|Attach|Attach files…"),
  • use the attachment button (the one with the paperclip icon) on the toolbar in Thunderbird's composition window.

And in addition to all that, right-click|send to|Thunderbird works just fine here. Does your context menu offer "Thunderbird"?
