After closing firefox 7.0.1,win7 64bit,and reopenning, tabs on toolbar are there but wont open (something new).
Something new today. I am getting recently viewed tabs on the task bar (each of these may have a few tabs) which appear on the taskbar but wont open. In order to get something to open I have to reclick on the Firefox icon on the desktop. Then that session opens okay with multiple windows and tabs...but those other tabs remain unopennable .When hovering over them on the task bar they show blank boxes, whereas the others look ok.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

Thank you for the reply. I have tried your suggestions...and I still get variable results! I am trying to figure out the pattern. My best guess is that something is creating a partially corrupt sessionstore.js file. I seem to get different results, but not consistently, when I close and reopen a session by crash, ie. reboot, vs file exit.
Sometimes when I click on the firefox icon on my desktop, it will open up my default url but in a teeny, tiny box which I have to expand to see anything. Never did that before!
I have been using firefox for years and never have had these problems. And I have had many crashes with many, many firefox windows and tabs open...and they would always restore fine. I have not changed settings or plugins. So somehow I feel something got corrupted. Is there a way to reinstall without losing all my things, such as user name and passwords, etc.?

The last suggestion worked! Replaced localstore.rdf from a backup. Now Firefox seems to come back properly after a regular exit or a restart computer. Thank you so much cor-el!!!
You're welcome.
