Why do I get this when I browse: http://search.certified-toolbar.com
When I browse, I get this address: http://search.certified-toolbar.com This precedes the website address I am at. I don't like this search engine if that's what it is. Where did Google go?

hello, please try to reset firefox and see if this can address the issue...
in addition run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes & adwcleaner.
Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware
Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
- Microsoft Safety Scanner
- MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
- TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility
- Hitman Pro
- ESET Online Scanner
Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

I cannot remove the software because it does not appear in the Control Panel under installed programs.
Not necessarily need to have the program in the control panel.Have you make a scan with antivirus? The problem is solved?
Nothing has worked so far.
Try to install this addon: SearchReset
This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.

I think this is one of the benefits of your HomeTab extension. On their FAQ, they say:
Can I change the search provider?
HomeTab is equipped with an advance search bar. Not only you get what you look for fast and easy, you get customized recommendations based on your search models.

I think that means "no," you are stuck with our choice.
It's your call whether to keep using this extension or remove it. To test whether that would make a difference, you can try disabling it here:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > in the left column click Extensions
