Hello, I have a verizon.net email address that was moved over to AOL and it was working well for a long time until a few months ago when AOL did some changes and for some reason the password I enter on Thunderbird is not accepted but the same password is working on the website

Today I happened to find others on this site that have the same problem and one suggestion was to change the authentication method to Oauth2 which I did and it accepted the password and I can receive emails now but the outgoing is still not working because there is no Oauth2 in the drop down list for the outgoing server so I cannot change it

Is there another solution or workaround for this ?

After doing some more searching on other websites about this OAuth2 I found a way to add it to the outgoing server I just changed the server name from smtp.verizon.net to smtp.aol.com and that added the OAuth2 to the drop down list so than I selected that and the outgoing email went out without asking for password

I don't know why AOL could not add this simple fix on their website They have to make it so complicated One of their solution was to remove the account and add it as a new account and somehow that will set it up automatically but if something goes wrong you have no help You have to sign up for a live support which is free for 30 days than start charging you 4.99 a month after that

AOL could not have messed this up any worst than they have.

I use four (4) Verizon.Net accounts (for 16 years), and was "drafted" into the AOL email conglomerate with the purchase of AOL by Verizon. I've had the same issue many other have had with the AOL password process change, and have been using WEB mail for a few weeks trying to figure this out. The "one time" 3rd party mail client password generated for my AOL mail accounts only works with the Thunderbird client, the WEB mail password does not change from your original AOL password. That's so confusing.... and absurd.

The new password generated for Thunderbird worked immediately when "receiving" email ONLY. I was getting a password the error when SENDING. I'm using the outgoing server : smpt.version.net, normal password, default port: 465. I tried using the smpt.aol.com Outgoing server, because i saw other AOL users using this outgoing server with success. The AOL.COM server did not work for me. I got the following error:

"An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: Request failed; Mailbox unavailable. Please verify that your email address is correct in your account settings and try again"

I finally got the OUTGOING mail server to work when using the "smtp.verizon.net" server, but I had to change the password to match the Thunderbird "one-time unique" password used with receiving email. .

More problems and clarification on the "one time 3rd party" client password......

My outgoing email stopped working again today for some, but not all of my accounts, only three of the four. Again, I have four (4) verizon.net accounts with AOL.

I think I found the key to making the outgoing email work.

1. Don't have multiple smtp outgoing server names for the same account. They will conflict with each other. I still had the AOL entry with Oauth2 entry for my verizon.net outgoing mail entry. After deleting the smtp.aol.com with Oauth2 entry, my outgoing email worked.

2. Also, I used a separate smtp.verizon.net entry for each of the accounts. I found if I tried to use one smtp.verizon.net entry for all accounts, it only worked for the account for which the account name was specified. Say I have accounts A.verizon.net and B.verizon.net. If the smtp.verizon.net entry was set to the account name A.verizon.net, I could sent email from A to B, but get an error when sending mail from account B to A. I would get the error "account unknown, check username, and authentication". Now, I've used these accounts for more than 15 years, so they exist, and I knew that user name was not the problem. I was able to send mail from B.verizon.net after I setup a new outgoing smtp.verizon.net entry for account B.verizon.net.

3. Another configuration entry I found was to create and use the "one time password" with no entry in your saved password list. They, when SEND fails and the Thunderbird pop-up asks for the outgoing password, enter the new "one time password", and CHECK THE BOX, to save the password in the "saved password" lists.

I know this was a little wordy, but I tried to be detailed.
