When you click on "Check for updates" with FF6, if there is an update available, Firefox now starts downloading the update almost immediately. Is there any way to increase the time elapsed before that download starts?

Yes there is! Here's how to do it:

Firefox > Options > Options > Advanced [Tab] > Update [Tab]

(Or Tools > Options > Advanced > Update)

Then in 'When updates to Firefox are found' part choose:

'Ask me what I want to do'.

This will do the trick.

If this helped don't forget to hit "Solved it" so the topic would be closed.

That is greyed out because the automatic check for updates is disabled. I have set to false all three app update enable settings. That no longer stops Firefox from starting a download if I check to see if there is a new version. If I could increase the delay (if there is one) between when the notice of a new version appears and the download of the update starts, I could abort the download before it starts. I need to know what the name of that delay is so that I can make it a lot longer.

I'm sorry, but there is no such a thing available in FF. Try to enable automatic update and select Ask me what I want to do See the if it helps you. (Don't disable anything)

The thing is, I do not want updates. I want to know if there is a new version available, and if so, I download the full version and install it myself, then save a backup copy of the disk image holding the application. I really dislike automatic updates.

You can disable updates if you want to do that manually yourself.
