How can I get rid of extra title bar?

After upgrading to version 20, I have a problem that has never existed before. Basically, after starting Firefox, it looks there are 2 title bars - both having the iconify, maximize, and close buttons on the right. The top one is titled as usual. The second one is nearly empty except for a new 1-button menu access button. On the first line below those two, I have a regular multiple-entry menu bar, the location bar, and my search bar. If I go into the new collapsed menu set and unselect Menu Bar, then my whole 3rd line, including location bar and search bar disappear. If I then go back and reenable Menu Bar, then things go back to what I have been accustomed to, with the extra 2nd line title bar and its single button gone.

There are two outcomes I would be happy with here, but I have not been able to accomplish either. The first would be for Firefox to start up in the manner I am used to without my having to fool with disabling and reenabling the Menu Bar. However, I would not mind if the new title bar with the collapsed menu button _replaced_ the old title bar, and the regular menu bar I have now were to go away. That would leave more room for the location and search bars on the same line. The second outcome would actually be my preference.

It is conceivable that I long ago tweaked something in about:config that is causing this, but I cannot find anything to suspect. (I did see entries in there for the old tinymenu addon, which I no longer have installed. I could not delete them.) I disabled all my Stylish addons thinking they might be interacting, but that did not help.

Also, could you try updating Tab Mix Plus to the current release and disable any other add-ons that affect the appearance of Firefox's toolbar/chrome area?

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category

If in doubt, disable ALL nonessential extensions for testing purposes and then restart Firefox so that takes effect. (I can report that NoScript doesn't cause this problem for me.)

I can't explain what you're seeing, since Firefox should know better than to draw two window title bars...

Sometimes the file that stores toolbar customizations becomes corrupted. You could try renaming the file and customizing from scratch.

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using

Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button

Switch back to Firefox and Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename localstore.rdf to something like localstore.old.

Restart Firefox. Hopefully now the display will return to normal.

I tried renaming localstore.rdf. It created a new one that behaves in the same wrong manner as the previous one.

When I installed V20 on my Windows 7 HTPC, nothing went wrong. (It even solved a problem I was experiencing with font rendering on that machine.) However, my neighbor is also getting strange symptoms with V20 under Vista. His bookmarks toolbar disappears on starting Firefox even though that toolbar is checked. Unchecking it and rechecking it restores the toolbar. Also, I cannot get his Firefox, on starting, to open his home page anymore, independent of what is specified as being the home page. It always just opens a blank tab. It also won't let me drag a location onto the bookmarks toolbar.

Unless someone can suggest another approach to restoring normal function, it strikes me that we should both revert to V19 for our desktops and wait for V21 to come around.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Regarding your neighbor's symptoms:

(1) His bookmarks toolbar disappears on starting Firefox even though that toolbar is checked. Unchecking it and rechecking it restores the toolbar.

(2) I cannot get his Firefox, on starting, to open his home page anymore, independent of what is specified as being the home page. It always just opens a blank tab.

(3) It also won't let me drag a location onto the bookmarks toolbar.

See #1.

We just had another thread on an extra title bar. In that case, it was the combination of Tab Mix Plus and a Norton toolbar that caused the problem. See: How do I get rid of the new toolbar that was added by versions 20 and 21?

I solved all problems on both machines by updating Tab Mix Plus. Apparently the reason that I was not seeing problems on my HTPC was that it seems that Tab Mix Plus had been upgraded automatically when V20 was installed. The strange thing about that is that the update to V20 on my XP desktop happened _after_ the update on my Windows 7 HTPC. (There were additional problems that I had not even discovered yet when I posted the second time. In particular, calling the .exe with a URL arg was opening a blank tab. My neighbor's home page issue was probably another manifestation of the underlying problem there.)

(I had long ago installed Tab Mix Plus on my neighbors' machine for just one little feature. They were frustrated by the fact that closing the last tab caused Firefox to exit. I could fix that with Tab Mix Plus.)

You can easily fix this without an extension by only toggling the browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab pref to false on the about:config page.
This will give a a close X on the last tab.
