After selecting a segment of a web page for printing, I go to the icon for printing and that obliterates the selection leaving only the entire page as the selection to be printed.

If you are using the Print toolbar button, starting in Firefox 29 the Print Preview window opens rather that the "Print dialog window" as with previous versions; using the Print button in the upper-left corner of the Preview takes you to the "Print dialog window". The "selected text" doesn't persist going thru the Preview window; no way to print a selection of text using the Print toolbar button. (a Bug report has been filed about that change - regression.)

As cor-el mentioned if you initiate printing via the keyboard, instead of using the Print button, you should be able to print a "Selection" of text. WFM - it works for me

I don't think you can. In Google Chrome you would right click on the selected text and choose 'Print' which would prompt the Print dialog and show you the selected text to be printed. In Firefox 30 anyways, it does not look like this is the case or is not built in as a feature of the Firefox browser.

You only other option would be to select your text, right click and select 'Copy' and copy the text to a different text editor like Word, Google Docs, or other text editor and print from that program.

There is a hacky way to do it in Firefox by right clicking and choosing 'View Selection Source', that will open another pop up with the selected text source. But this will also give you all the HTML wrapped around the selected text.

You can open the Print menu via the Ctrl+P shortcut of via the File menu (File > Print).

  • Tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu bar.

@cor-el,

The questions was how to print selected or highlighted text not how to print in general. The functionality to print just selected text within a webpage does not seem to be a function of Firefox.

Of course the selected text can be printed individually.

Just select the desired text on the current page and press CTRL+P.

This will bring up the Print dialog, where you can simply select the "Selection" option there. This will print out only the selected text.

I just did this on my Firefox 30.0 and it worked perfectly.
