Why do some sites open fine - Amazon - but some take ages and display without HTML formatting - ebay, BBC - and Google takes forever?

It is slightly different with me. Amazon loads normally, works normally. Ebay displays in text with hyperlinked words underlined, strung out down the page. BBC home page does the same, yet my own website loads fine, although loading is taking minutes rather than seconds, and Google [either the site or searches] takes forever, and never resolves. Google owns Ebay doesn't it? Is there a connection?

Prior to updating Firefox I have done nothing else except uninstall AVG because I thought it was slowing every process down - emails were taking ages to check.

I have reinstalled Firefox, checked plugins, rebooted, tried another computer and a wifi laptop, and all are the same.
