Solved Language pack installs, but on restart disappears again. Reason: Language pack changes the UI, not the dictionary. (as designed)

Never mind, found the answer when I googled other forums. Not from this "support" forum. The installation instructions suck, they make you install an irrelevant language pack, not the spell checker you're trying to get. Why doesn't the "add new language" on a write mail spell checking menu actually add a new spell checking language?

I've installed the Finnish language pack five times using the instructions, but after restarting Thunderbird it's never there in the languages when writing a mail. There's only the same nag to download more languages, which result in the same uselessness. What gives?

re :they make you install an irrelevant language pack, not the spell checker you're trying to get.

No one makes you install anything and 'Dictionaries' are a completely separate download from 'Language Packs'.

In a new Write window. click on 'Spelling' Under 'Language', clickon drop down and select 'Download more dictionaries' This opens a tab showing all the available 'Dictionaries' and 'Language Packs' for the various Languages.

If you want to download another dictionary then you do have to actually select a dictionary. This works very simply for most people.

However, I notice you installed the Finnish language pack, so for you it would not be so eay to locate the 'dictionary'. You probably noticed that there is no download for a Finnish Dictionary.

If you are looking for a 'Finnish' Dictionary, there is an Addon extension called 'Finnish Spellchecker' which should be of interest.

How to Install Add-on Extension: After downloading addon extension *.xpi file to desktop or downloads folder.

In Thunderbird 'Tools' > 'Add-ons' or 'Menu icon' > 'Add-ons'

  • Click on gear wheel icon and select 'Install Add-on From File'.
  • Locate the *.xpi file you downloaded and click on 'Open'.
  • You may need to restart Thunderbird when prompted.
