I can no longer use FireFox on any of my financial accounts. I have tried FireFox (60.0.2 64-bit) on 2 mobile devices, a laptop and my desktop. None work. All other browsers work: Edge, Safari, Google on all devices. Firefox just doesn't work anymore. If there is a simple fix, fine....if you go into depth on changing all my devices, you will probably lose me.

I too have encountered "issues" like this with my financial institutions. The primary one is the "browser blueprinting" that big banks have started doing. If you have a login set up and working in Chrome, for example, and try to use it in Edge, or Firefox, or even the old Internet Explorer, banking institutions that use this approach will force you to "re-identify" yourself to them under the new preferred browser. It is not unique to Firefox as a problem. The financial institutions in this country (U.S.) tend to like Edge.

One of the most annoying common issues is the addition of "password remembering" built into most browsers. Edge does it, Chrome does it, now, I believe Firefox can do it.

My situation may be even more interesting. For years, I have been using a third party "identity management" application where I store logins and passwords I use for web browsing since I need to know how any browser is going to interact with the development work I'm involved with. That application invokes a "default browser" that I can switch in my operating system rather than in the application. The way they handle this issue of browser blueprinting is an additional source of confusion because in the course of the evolution of their application, they changed it without much fanfare.

At least, know that you are NOT ALONE. I have just recently poked my head into FireFox support forums, so I do not know if there is a specific problem with 60.x versions.

Hi MichaelLoDico, you said

Firefox just doesn't work anymore.

Could you describe the failure in more detail? For example:

  • Specific error message --
    • Connection is not secure
    • Secure connection failed
    • Something else (please copy/paste if possible)
  • Selected a menu item but Firefox doesn't respond
  • Region of page won't load (e.g., an interactive diagram/chart, or an embedded subpage)

jesher2000.....in my bank on line, when I click to enter after entering my username/password, it just spins and never loads. On my credit card page it won't let me make a payment or view past history, again it spins and doesnt load. No error messages. My Intuit Payroll won't let me pay employees. Anything financial, anything IMPORTANT it won't work. I have had Tech Support at the bank site and credit care site spend hours and I even gave remote access. Nothing. --- At the same time Edge and Safari and Google work flawlessly. You have all the info I can share. Obviously I cant and wont take a screen shot. It won't show anything but my sensitive info.

Right now I am exporting out of FireFox and going to Edge. I really dont have the time to spend on this, when a payroll is due and a credit card needs payment. This started about 4 months ago. Just my Citibank card site. Then payroll became an issue. After Intuit tried everything (a 4 hour escalated problem) I learned Edge & Safari & Google browsers had no problem. Now as more and more sites I critically need don't work, I just go to another browser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled FireFox but with a mobile app, desktop, laptop, and home desktop ALL don't work.

Hi MichaelLoDico, it sounds as though the navigation to a new page, or a background request, is blocked or is timing out. Since there's no error message displayed, we would hope to gather information using one of Firefox's error consoles, either the Web Console that opens in the lower part of the tab or the Browser Console that opens in a separate window. Did the tech support look in those places? I suppose that may be difficult to remember if they weren't talking through what they were doing.

Things you could try that don't involve sorting through error messages include:

Double-check content blockers: Firefox's Tracking Protection feature and extensions that counter ads and tracking may break websites that weren't built to operate normally without the blocked components.

Do you see a shield icon toward the left end of the address bar, near the lock icon? More info on managing the Tracking Protection feature in this article: What happened to Tracking Protection?.

Extensions such as Adblock Plus, Blur, Disconnect, Ghostery, NoScript, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin or uMatrix should provide toolbar buttons to manage blocked content in a page. There may or may not be a number on the icon indicating the number of blocked items; you may need to click the button to see what's going on and test whether you need to make an exception for this site.

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode: In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

If it were just one site, I'd suggest the following, but at this point, it sounds like something else:

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button

In the dialog that opens, the current site should be pre-filled in the search box at the top of the dialog so you can remove that site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Actually forget all that and use a different browser for now.

But as a more general question, do you ever notice issues connecting to secure sites in Firefox, for example, problems with certificates? If so, we need to solve that problem first, when you come up for air.

I only have 2 add-ons, extensions (video downloaders) I disabled both and rebooted......no. Made sure they were still disabled. no. I did the safe mode......no. I did it again, the Intuit guy did it as well. There was no shield. just a green padlock. I have cleared the cache and cookies, actually a number of times. Each time when I checked (the simple way is to look at last months transactions......just a spinning loading star in the center of the page...

Ok so what are the names of the Financial and Bank that aren't letting you log in? So if others use them they can verify if it happens to them or not.
