on previous laptops I could log onto sites with an account system, click the 'remember me' button before logging in and I would be automatically logged in when visiting the site, even if it was a new session. What settings do I need to make this possible?

"Remember me" options are stored in cookies. Try all the options in the websites say cookies are blocked article. If you are still having problems then the file that stores cookies could be corrupt and you can try deleting the file.

  1. Open the profile folder using the procedure in the profiles article
  2. Close Firefox
  3. In the profile folder delete cookies.sqlite

You should then use a "remember me" option on a site and check if Firefox automatically logs you in on the next visit.

You should be careful with using "Forget about this site" as that will also remove stored passwords.

Also make sure that you do not run Firefox in Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode ("Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session" has a check-mark).
