Is there a way to add the "Webmail Notifier" icon that appears between the address bar and the search bar to the system tray so it will show there also?

I have recently gotten high speed internet to replace aol dialup. I no longer needed the aol browser so I canceled my monthly fee with aol and currently use Firefox as my default browser. (Incidentally, I have used AOL, IE, and Opera browsers and nothing is even in the same league with Firefox due to Firefox's extensive add-ons and extensions). So I added the Web Mail Notifier to Firefox and programed it for my AOL mail. It works well but I was thinking it would be nice to be able to add the envelope icon to the system tray for when the laptop is idle so I'll know if I have mail without having to open Firefox.

You can request new features in this forum:
http://webmailnotifier.mozdev.org/drupal/forum/

But I don't think it would be possible, exactly like you described. An extension can't do anything until Firefox is opened and running. Plus the developer would have to create a different version for every Operating System he decided to support with a feature like that - Windoze, MacOSX, and Linux - to be able to use the "System Tray".

Different versions of firefox may have different details of doing this, but the general procedure is as follows:

1. Select "Toolbar Layout (firefox 4)" or "Customize Toolbar (firefox earlier rev)"

2. Scroll down in the icon field until the Webmail Notifier icon is visible

3. Drag the icon to your desired toolbar or in between elements on your address bar.

Voila.
